Synopsis

In the aftermath of the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act, FWAG was strongly promoted as a means of reconciling agricultural and conservation interests. Benefiting from interviews with FWAG Advisers and staff and access to the Countryside Commission and FWAG archives, the authors examine the history and development of FWAC, and the much-vaunted - and curiously British - voluntary principle it exemplifies. That voluntary principle is two-sided: negatively, it is an ideological defence of the autonomy of farmers and landowners; positively, it is about encouraging the social ethic concerning stewardship of the countryside. In the light of these attitudes, the book assesses FWAG’s effectiveness and speculates on the future of farm conservation policy.
